Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 2 firm apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), thinly sliced (about 1/8 inch thick)
  • 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons apricot jam or honey
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Powdered sugar, for dusting (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the apple slices: Thinly slice the apples as evenly as possible, about 1/8 inch thick. Simmer the slices in a mixture of water and lemon juice for a few minutes until they soften to become flexible but still hold shape. This prevents cracking when rolling.
  2. Roll out the pastry: Lightly flour a surface and roll out the thawed puff pastry sheet. Cut the pastry into long strips approximately 2 inches wide to form the base for the roses.
  3. Arrange the apple slices: Lay the softened apple slices overlapping along one edge of each pastry strip, with the rounded peel edges sticking out to create the rose petals.
  4. Add flavor: Lightly brush the apple slices with apricot jam or honey. Evenly sprinkle ground cinnamon over the slices to enhance flavor and aroma.
  5. Roll and bake: Gently roll the pastry strips from one end to the other to form rose shapes. Place each rose upright in a muffin tin or baking dish. Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 35-40 minutes until the pastry is golden brown and apples are tender.
  6. Finishing touches: Once slightly cooled, glaze the roses again with warm apricot jam for a glossy finish. Dust with powdered sugar if desired before serving.

Notes

  • Use fresh, firm apples for best shape retention and even slicing.
  • Do not over-soak apple slices; a brief simmer keeps them flexible without becoming mushy.
  • Slice apples uniformly thin (around 1/8 inch) for neat rolling and even baking.
  • Chill puff pastry before handling to make rolling easier and ensure flakier texture.
  • Watch baking time carefully to avoid drying out pastry or apples.
