Baked Boudin Balls

Baked Boudin Balls

Baked Boudin Balls are a crispy, savory snack that captures the bold flavors of traditional boudin sausage wrapped in a crunchy baked shell. Perfect as a party appetizer or anytime snack, these bite-sized morsels combine spiced pork, rice, and herbs into a flavorful and guilt-free treat with a satisfying crunch.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 1 lb cooked boudin sausage (casing removed)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs (or gluten-free alternative like crushed gluten-free crackers or almond flour)
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • ¼ tsp cayenne pepper or 1 tsp hot sauce (optional)
  • Cooking spray or oil, for coating baking sheet

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Boudin Mixture: Remove the casing from the cooked boudin sausage and place the sausage meat into a mixing bowl. Add the eggs, breadcrumbs, onion powder, garlic powder, and optional cayenne pepper or hot sauce. Mix thoroughly until well combined and moldable.
  2. Shape the Balls: Using your hands, form the mixture into uniform bite-sized balls about 1 to 1.5 inches in diameter for even cooking and appealing presentation.
  3. Preheat Oven and Prep Baking Sheet: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease it with cooking spray to prevent sticking and ensure even browning.
  4. Bake Until Golden: Arrange the boudin balls on the prepared baking sheet, spacing them apart to allow crisping. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, flipping halfway through the cooking time to ensure a crispy and evenly browned exterior.
  5. Cool and Serve: Remove the boudin balls from the oven and let them cool for a few minutes to let the flavors settle and texture firm up before serving.

Notes

  • Chill the formed balls in the refrigerator for 30 minutes before baking to help them hold their shape better.
  • Use fresh or panko breadcrumbs for a lighter, crunchier crust.
  • Do not overcrowd the baking sheet; provide enough space between balls for optimal crisping.
  • Adjust seasoning carefully since boudin is already well-seasoned to avoid overpowering natural flavors.
  • Serve warm fresh from the oven or reheat in the oven to maintain crispiness, avoiding microwaving which can make them soggy.
