Ingredients

Scale

Ingredients

  • 1 large Vidalia or sweet onion (firm with wide petals)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour (or gluten-free flour alternative)
  • 1 cup seasoned bread crumbs (or gluten-free bread crumbs)
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper (adjust to taste)
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk or milk
  • Oil for frying (vegetable or canola) or cooking spray for baking

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Onion: Trim the top of the onion and peel off the outer skin, being careful not to remove too many layers. Slice the onion from the top down about an inch above the root to keep the petals connected. Gently separate the petals so they fan out like a blooming flower.
  2. Soak in Buttermilk: Place the separated onion petals in a bowl filled with buttermilk. Let them soak for at least 30 minutes to soften the onion slightly and help the coating adhere better.
  3. Mix the Coating: In a large bowl, combine flour, seasoned bread crumbs, paprika, garlic powder, cayenne pepper, salt, and black pepper. Mix thoroughly to create the dry coating mixture.
  4. Coat the Onion Petals: Remove petals from buttermilk and dredge each petal in the dry mixture, coating thoroughly. For extra crispiness, dip petals back into buttermilk and coat again for a double layer.
  5. Fry Until Golden: Heat oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 350°F (175°C). Carefully lower the coated onion into hot oil and fry for 3 to 5 minutes until golden brown and crispy. Drain on paper towels to remove excess oil.
  6. Serve and Enjoy: Serve the warm Blooming Onion Petals with your favorite dipping sauces for optimal flavor and crunch.

Notes

  • Choose a firm onion with sturdy petals to keep the onion intact during frying.
  • Soaking in buttermilk is essential for flavor and helps the coating stick better.
  • Double coating provides extra crispiness and a thicker crust.
  • Maintain oil temperature at 350°F (175°C) to prevent greasy or undercooked petals.
  • Enjoy immediately after frying for the best crispiness.
