Cookie Dough
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 large egg
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
Buttercream Frosting
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 2 1/2 cups powdered sugar, sifted
- 2 tbsp heavy cream or milk
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- Food coloring (optional)
Optional Decorations
- Sprinkles
- Edible glitter
- Crushed candy canes
- Prepare the Cookie Dough: Cream the unsalted butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Mix in the egg and vanilla extract. In a separate bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour and baking powder, then gradually mix into the wet ingredients until a soft dough forms. Chill the dough for at least 30 minutes to make it easier to handle.
- Shape and Bake the Cookies: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Roll the chilled dough on a lightly floured surface about 1/4 inch thick. Cut into festive shapes using cookie cutters and place on a parchment-lined baking sheet, spacing evenly. Bake for 8-10 minutes or until the edges just begin to turn golden. Cool completely on wire racks before frosting.
- Make the Buttercream Frosting: Beat softened unsalted butter until creamy and smooth. Gradually add sifted powdered sugar on low speed. Add heavy cream or milk and vanilla extract, then beat on high speed until light and fluffy. Add food coloring if desired and mix until uniformly colored.
- Frost and Decorate: Spread or pipe the buttercream frosting onto cooled cookies using a piping bag or spatula. Decorate with sprinkles, edible glitter, or crushed candy canes. Allow frosting to set for about an hour before serving or packaging.
Notes
- Chill the dough thoroughly to prevent spreading and maintain cookie shape.
- Sift powdered sugar to ensure smooth, lump-free frosting.
- Use room temperature butter for creamy, easy-to-beat frosting texture.
- Do not overbake cookies to keep them soft and tender.
- For neat frosting designs, use a piping bag fitted with your preferred tip.
