Ingredients

Scale

Bread and Coating

  • Thick sliced bread, 1 to 1.5 inches thick (soft white or milk bread preferred)
  • 2 large eggs, beaten

For Frying and Topping

  • Butter, about 2 tablespoons (for frying and topping)
  • Condensed milk, honey, or maple syrup (for drizzling)

Optional Extras

  • Peanut butter, for spreading inside the sandwich (optional)
  • Fresh fruits like strawberries or bananas (optional, for topping)
  • Jam, cream cheese, or chocolate spread (optional, for filling)
  • Breadcrumbs, for coating before frying (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Bread: Cut thick, soft bread into slices about 1 to 1.5 inches thick. If desired, spread peanut butter, jam, cream cheese, or other fillings evenly between two slices to form a sandwich before dipping.
  2. Beat Your Eggs: Crack 2 eggs into a shallow bowl and whisk thoroughly until smooth to create the coating mixture.
  3. Dip the Sandwich: Fully immerse the bread sandwich into the beaten eggs, making sure both sides absorb the mixture well. Let it soak for 20 to 30 seconds for a richer, custardy interior.
  4. Pan-Fry Until Golden: Heat a pan over medium heat and melt a generous knob of butter (about 1 tablespoon). Place the egg-coated bread sandwich into the pan and cook for 2 to 3 minutes on each side, until golden brown and slightly crispy.
  5. Add Sweet Toppings: Transfer the cooked toast to a serving plate. Immediately spread a little extra butter on top and drizzle with condensed milk, honey, or maple syrup. Optionally, garnish with fresh fruit slices or nuts according to your preference.

Notes

  • Use day-old or slightly stale bread to better absorb egg mixture without falling apart.
  • Allow enough soaking time (20-30 seconds) for a creamy, custardy interior.
  • Fry on low to medium heat to avoid burning and ensure even cooking.
  • Use unsalted butter for better control over seasoning and flavor.
  • Serve immediately for the crispiest, most delicious texture.
