Dough Ingredients
- 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar (divided)
- 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast (1 packet)
- 1 cup warm milk (about 110°F / 43°C)
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 2 large eggs
- 2 tbsp fresh orange zest (about 1–2 oranges)
- 1/2 tsp salt
Filling Ingredients
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 2 tbsp granulated sugar
- 1 tbsp fresh orange zest
Glaze Ingredients
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 2–3 tbsp fresh orange juice
- 1 tsp fresh orange zest
- Prepare the Dough: Warm the milk to about 110°F (43°C) and dissolve the active dry yeast with 1 tablespoon of sugar. Let it bloom until frothy, about 5-10 minutes. In a large bowl, combine the flour, remaining sugar, melted butter, eggs, orange zest, salt, and the yeast mixture. Knead until smooth and elastic, about 8-10 minutes by hand or 5-7 minutes with a mixer. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 to 1.5 hours.
- Roll and Add Filling: Punch down the risen dough and roll it out into a large rectangle on a lightly floured surface. Spread the softened butter evenly over the dough, sprinkle with sugar and orange zest. Roll the dough tightly from the long edge into a log shape.
- Slice and Proof: Cut the rolled dough into 1 to 1.5-inch thick slices. Arrange the slices cut-side down in a greased baking pan. Cover with a towel and let proof for 30-45 minutes until puffy and nearly doubled.
- Bake to Golden Perfection: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the rolls for 20-25 minutes until golden brown on top. Remove from oven and let cool slightly before glazing.
- Make and Apply the Glaze: In a bowl, whisk powdered sugar with fresh orange juice and zest until smooth and pourable. Drizzle generously over the warm rolls, allowing the glaze to soak in and create a shiny finish.
Notes
- Use warm milk (not hot) to activate the yeast without killing it.
- Grate zest from organic oranges to avoid bitterness and maximize flavor.
- Don’t skip the second proof for fluffier, airier rolls.
- Use dental floss or a sharp knife to slice the rolls evenly.
- Apply the glaze while rolls are warm to help it soak in beautifully.
