Ingredients

Scale

Pastry

  • 1 sheet thawed store-bought puff pastry

Mushroom Filling

  • 8 oz fresh cremini or button mushrooms, finely chopped
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp olive oil or butter
  • 4 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 tbsp fresh parsley or thyme, chopped
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste

For Baking

  • 1 egg, beaten (or milk) for brushing

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Mushroom Filling: Finely chop mushrooms, onion, and garlic. Heat olive oil or butter in a skillet over medium heat and sauté onions until translucent. Add garlic and mushrooms, cooking until most moisture evaporates and mixture turns golden. Season with salt, pepper, and fresh herbs. Remove from heat, let cool slightly, then stir in cream cheese and Parmesan until well combined.
  2. Roll Out the Puff Pastry: On a lightly floured surface, unfold the thawed puff pastry sheet. Use a rolling pin to gently even out the dough, smoothing it but keeping it slightly thick for flaky texture.
  3. Spread the Filling: Evenly spread the mushroom mixture over the puff pastry sheet, leaving about a 1/2-inch border around the edges to prevent filling spillage when rolling.
  4. Roll and Slice: Carefully roll the puff pastry sheet from one side into a tight log, ensuring the seam is underneath. Using a sharp knife, slice the roll into 1-inch thick pinwheels.
  5. Bake the Pinwheels: Place pinwheels on a parchment-lined baking sheet, spacing them apart. Lightly brush tops with beaten egg or milk. Bake in a preheated oven at 400°F (200°C) for 15-20 minutes, or until puffed and golden brown.

Notes

  • Keep the puff pastry chilled before and during preparation to ensure maximum flakiness.
  • Drain mushrooms thoroughly to avoid soggy filling and pastry.
  • Do not overfill the pastry to prevent leakage during baking.
  • Slice pinwheels evenly for consistent baking.
  • Use parchment paper on the baking tray to prevent sticking and ease cleanup.
