Ingredients

Scale

Filling

  • 4 cups fresh or canned peaches (peeled and sliced)
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

Topping

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour (or gluten-free flour blend for gluten-free option)
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup milk (or plant-based milk like almond or oat milk for vegan option)
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, melted (or plant-based butter for vegan option)

Optional Toppings

  • Chopped pecans or walnuts
  • Vanilla ice cream or whipped cream
  • Cinnamon sugar for sprinkling

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Peaches: Peel and slice fresh peaches or drain canned peaches well. Toss them with sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon, and nutmeg in a bowl. Set aside to marinate, allowing the flavors to meld and juices to release.
  2. Make the Batter: In a separate bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking powder, and a pinch of salt. Stir in the milk and melted butter until just combined to create a smooth batter without overmixing.
  3. Assemble the Cobbler: Butter a baking dish thoroughly. Pour the peach mixture evenly into the dish. Spoon the batter over the peaches, leaving some gaps so the peaches peek through during baking for a rustic appearance. Optionally sprinkle chopped nuts on top for added crunch.
  4. Bake to Perfection: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the cobbler for 40 to 45 minutes until the crust is golden brown and the peach filling is bubbly and fragrant.
  5. Cool and Serve: Allow the cobbler to cool for 10 to 15 minutes so the juices thicken. Serve warm topped with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, or a sprinkle of cinnamon sugar for added sweetness and creaminess.

Notes

  • Use ripe peaches for the best natural sweetness and texture.
  • Mix batter just until combined to keep the crust light and tender.
  • Butter the baking dish well to prevent sticking and enhance flavor.
  • Adjust sugar in the filling to balance peach sweetness or tartness.
  • Cool the cobbler before serving to allow the filling to thicken and improve serving consistency.
