Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20 lean)
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped onion
  • 1/3 cup bread crumbs (regular or gluten-free)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 cup beef broth (preferably homemade or low-sodium)
  • 1 can (10.5 oz) mushroom soup or 1 cup fresh sliced mushrooms
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons flour or cornstarch (for thickening gravy)
  • 1 tablespoon oil (for browning)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Patties: In a large bowl, gently combine ground beef, finely chopped onions, bread crumbs, egg, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix just until combined to avoid tough patties. Shape the mixture into oval patties about 3 to 4 inches long and 1/2 inch thick.
  2. Brown the Patties: Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the patties and cook for 3 to 4 minutes on each side until nicely browned. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.
  3. Make the Gravy: In the same skillet, sauté fresh mushrooms and onions (if using fresh) until soft. Stir in flour or cornstarch and cook for 1 minute to absorb the fat. Gradually whisk in beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Continue whisking until the gravy thickens and becomes smooth.
  4. Simmer the Patties in Gravy: Return the browned patties to the skillet. Spoon gravy over the patties, cover, and simmer on low heat for about 15 minutes. This allows the patties to finish cooking and soak up the savory flavors.

Notes

  • Do not overmix the meat to keep patties tender and juicy.
  • Use a meat thermometer to ensure internal temperature of 160°F for perfectly cooked beef.
  • Browning the patties well before simmering adds deeper flavor.
  • Choose homemade or low-sodium beef broth for enhanced taste.
  • Let patties rest in the gravy for a few minutes after cooking to maximize flavor absorption.
  • Use gluten-free bread crumbs and flour/cornstarch to make this recipe gluten-free.
