The Simple Toasted Italian Sandwich is a quick and delicious meal featuring bold Italian flavors, crispy toasted bread, and melty provolone cheese. Perfect for lunch or dinner, this sandwich combines salami, roasted red peppers, fresh basil, and a tangy olive oil and vinegar dressing. Easily customizable and ready in under 15 minutes, it’s a satisfying choice for any occasion.

Ingredients

Bread

  • Italian bread (fresh baguette or ciabatta), sliced into sandwich-sized portions

Meat and Cheese

  • Salami slices (enough for layering)
  • Provolone cheese, sliced

Vegetables and Herbs

  • Roasted red peppers, drained
  • Fresh basil leaves, washed

Dressing and Seasoning

  • Olive oil, for brushing and dressing
  • Vinegar (such as red wine vinegar), for dressing
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare Your Ingredients: Slice the Italian bread into sandwich-sized portions. Cut the provolone cheese and salami into manageable slices. Drain the roasted red peppers and wash the fresh basil leaves thoroughly for freshness.
  2. Layer the Sandwich: On the bottom half of each bread slice, layer the salami slices, drained roasted red peppers, and fresh basil leaves. Top with sliced provolone cheese and season lightly with salt and pepper.
  3. Toast the Sandwich: Preheat a sandwich press or skillet over medium heat. Lightly brush the outside of the bread slices with olive oil. Place the sandwich in the press or skillet and toast until the bread is golden brown and crispy and the cheese has melted, approximately 3-5 minutes.
  4. Add Dressing and Serve: Carefully remove the toasted sandwich and drizzle the olive oil and vinegar dressing over it to add a tangy finish. Close the sandwich and serve immediately for the best flavor and texture.

Notes

  • Use day-old bread for better toasting and to prevent sogginess.
  • Layer the cheese under the meat so it melts evenly and holds the sandwich together.
  • Avoid overloading the sandwich with fillings to make toasting easier and less messy.
  • Brush bread with olive oil to achieve a crisp, flavorful crust.
  • Allow the sandwich to rest for a minute after toasting to let the cheese set slightly for easier eating.
