Sweet Potato Pie

Sweet Potato Pie is a classic Southern dessert featuring a rich, creamy filling made from sweet potatoes, warm spices, and a flaky pie crust. Perfect for holidays or casual gatherings, this comforting pie balances sweetness and earthiness with a smooth texture and cozy flavors.

Ingredients

Scale

Filling

  • 2 cups mashed sweet potatoes (boiled or roasted)
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup milk or cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg

Pie Crust

  • 1 9-inch flaky or buttery pie crust (homemade or store-bought)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Sweet Potatoes: Peel and cut sweet potatoes into chunks, then boil until tender or roast to enhance sweetness. Mash thoroughly until smooth for a creamy filling.
  2. Mix the Filling: In a large bowl, combine mashed sweet potatoes, softened butter, sugar, eggs, vanilla extract, milk or cream, ground cinnamon, and nutmeg. Whisk until silky and uniform.
  3. Prepare the Pie Crust: Place the pie crust in a 9-inch pie dish. To prevent sogginess, chill or blind bake the crust slightly before filling.
  4. Pour and Smooth the Filling: Pour the sweet potato mixture into the crust and smooth the top evenly with a spatula.
  5. Bake to Perfection: Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 55 to 65 minutes, until the filling is set with a slight jiggle in the center. Avoid overbaking to maintain creaminess.
  6. Cool and Chill: Let the pie cool at room temperature, then chill in the refrigerator for several hours to firm up and enhance flavors.

Notes

  • Use fresh sweet potatoes for the best texture and flavor.
  • Mix filling just until combined to avoid incorporating excess air and cracking.
  • A slight jiggle in the center when done is normal; the pie sets further as it cools.
  • Blind bake the crust to prevent sogginess from the moist filling.
  • Adjust spices according to taste before baking.
