Ingredients

Scale

Steak and Skewers

  • 1 lb flank, sirloin, or ribeye steak, cut into bite-sized pieces
  • Wooden or metal skewers (if wooden, soaked in water for 30 minutes)

Sticky Soy Marinade

  • 1/4 cup soy sauce (or tamari for gluten-free option)
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, grated
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar

Garnish

  • 2 green onions, chopped
  • Optional: toasted sesame seeds
  • Optional: lime wedges

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Marinade: In a medium bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, brown sugar, minced garlic, freshly grated ginger, sesame oil, and rice vinegar until the sugar dissolves and the mixture is well combined.
  2. Cut and Marinate the Steak: Slice the steak into uniform bite-sized pieces. Place them in the marinade and toss to coat evenly. Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, up to 4 hours for deeper flavor.
  3. Soak and Prepare Skewers: If using wooden skewers, soak them in water for at least 30 minutes to prevent burning during grilling. Metal skewers can be used directly.
  4. Assemble Skewers: Thread the marinated steak pieces onto the skewers, packing them snugly but not too tightly for even cooking.
  5. Grill the Skewers: Preheat your grill to medium-high heat. Place skewers on the grill and cook approximately 3-4 minutes per side, basting occasionally with leftover marinade. Grill until the steak reaches desired doneness and develops a caramelized glaze.
  6. Garnish and Serve: Remove skewers from the grill and let rest for a few minutes. Sprinkle with chopped green onions, sesame seeds if desired, and serve with optional lime wedges for a fresh finishing touch.

Notes

  • Choose tender steak cuts like flank, sirloin, or ribeye for best results.
  • Marinate steak no longer than 4 hours to avoid mushy texture.
  • Preheat grill well to get a good sear and caramelization on the skewers.
  • Turn skewers frequently to prevent burning and ensure even cooking.
  • Reserve some marinade before adding raw steak to use for basting or dipping.
